ooooh I want to paddle I’ll even castaway but that is a dream . Great mood paintings Jean .
What on earth will you cartoon from that glorious idylic scene ?

  2. Mary Says:

Whoa! Hold the horses! Time went zipping so fast I didn’t even get a chance to comment on the last piece!!! (Lovely, by the way!). I think this painting is one that represents time standing still. I can easily see myself nestled between those inviting rocks sipping a strawberry daquiri…exploring and musing over sweetly vacant thoughts…(while the surrounding, turbulant “waters of the world” churn and toil away)
Looking forward to your cartoon Jean!

  3. Jean Burman Says:

Thanks Elinor… it is a kind of “get away from it all” scene isn’t it? I like Mary’s take on it too… (a metaphor I hadn’t considered)… time standing still while the waters of the world churn and toil away. I like that! A little piece of peace?

Thanks both of you for looking… sorry I jumped the gun Mary by posting again so soon… but these little paintings have really captivated me… I will however be slowing down soon as I can’t get hold of any more of this size panel anywhere. I’ve ordered some… but will have to wait as I think the highway is cut by floodwaters between here and Brisbane… (maybe they’ll send them airfreight but I won’t hold my breath on that one!)

Cool … I can’t help but be reminded of Tom Hanks and Helen Hunt in the 2000 movie of the same title. That movie will always hold a special place in my heart. :) Love your painting, Jean. I’m another who loves the gallery-wrap canvas. Hope your delivery comes soon.

  5. Jean Burman Says:

    Thanks Nita… I hope so too! :-)

I love these, Jean. Tackling a new medium is wonderful, isn’t it, the discovery and excitement. Like you, I’ve been through the struggles with the flat wash, as well as wrestling with the vagaries of oils and the whimsies of acrylics, and have fallen in love with the potential of them all. One of the things I’ve discovered to my joy is that they’re all just a different ways of putting color on a surface. I don’t mean to diminish the coinsiderable challenges, but it was amazing the way once I’d realize this it all became much more fun. Great work!!!

BTW, I can’t wait for the ‘toon.

  8. Jean Burman Says:

    Thanks John! :-D

A few years ago I went into self imposed exile… put the watercolours aside and painted exclusively in acrylics for a whole year. I learned a lot… including the fact that (despite them giving me a terrible headache)… I really don’t like them at all! (((LOL))) (impossible to blend and way too quick to dry!) The Genesis oils are by comparison waaay easier to manage… and compared to watercolour… they’re a leisurely walk in the park!

But I have missed the cartoons… so I got in and whipped one up this morning…. inspired by… surprise surprise “a walk in the park” … well… along the Esplanade anyway! Now all I have to do is write something to go with it (!)

Sorry I got here late Jean…”cast away” is gorgeous. love it! I love the big sweeps of paint you used for the incoming tide and the cool oceanic colours makes me want to dive into it! Yes..there have been major floods near Brisbane and bridges have been swept away, my bet is the trucks will go further inland to get around it all. Where do you put your paintings once they are finished…do you have a gallery? Looking forward to you upcoming “toon”!!

  10. Jean Burman Says:

Thanks Jools! :-) These small ones will go in an online gallery which (hopefully) Andrew will put together for me… if I ask him nicely! ~grin~

  11. Garden Jools Says:

Oh surely it will happen then!!!! Thats exciting Jean…be as sweet as you are and it will happen in no time! Looking forward to your “opening night!!”
