I drew this cartoon last year but didn’t get around to painting it. This morning as I was doing the rounds of my favourite blogs… a comment made by my friend John Crowther (over on his cartoon odyssey) got me thinking again about the topic of “growing old -vs- growing young”.
Here’s what he had to say:
As I stand on the threshold of completing another decade I ask myself… what is the line between youth and old age? It’s that point in your life when you stop wanting to seem more grown up, and you wish you looked younger than your years. In other words it’s when life keeps offering you new wrinkles.
I thought this was hilarious. And so keenly observed!
I don’t know about you but I think there are definitely perks in this growing older caper. Not that I’m really old yet… but the time will no doubt come…. probably sooner than I’d like. Or… maybe not. Depending on how I feel about it… and how I decide to handle it.
Let’s “face” it (wrinkles and all)… growing older gives us choices for the very first time in our lives about how we will go about adding on those years. As children we couldn’t wait to be all grown up. As teenagers we couldn’t wait to be free (yeah like that will ever happen! tee-hee). As adults with families careers and high expectations in tow… we couldn’t wait to get out of the workaday world. But as older people… wow… suddenly the world is your oyster!
Then and only then… for the very first time you get to decide the particulars of how and when you will grow older…. or better yet… grow “younger”. It’s an attitude… and entirely your decision.
Some of the oldest people I know have no wrinkles at all. They’ve been old since birth. On the other hand… some of the youngest people I know may have wrinkles in all the wrong places… but they are still going places at a rate of knots that might leave the “chronologically advantaged” green with envy (were it not for their youthful lack of wisdom and insight! grin)
Long story short. Age is immaterial. Inside each of us is the child the teenager the adult and the older person. We are one and the same. Just as children report how they disliked being spoken down to as a child… older people report the very same thing.
It was a favourite beef of my mother’s that the elderly are spoken down to as children because… perhaps they couldn’t hear well… or because they couldn’t walk too well… or because they were dependent to some degree on others. It does seem just a tad ironic doesn’t it?
In truth… we are timeless beings without a number. By coincidence… walking the planet at the very same time. We may be on different paths and on what would seem to be a vastly differing time plan… but we are all nonetheless “in it together”… no matter the age.
Life is short. We don’t need to be reminded. (No… I take that back… the young definitely need to be reminded)
So in the grand scale of things what’s a few wrinkles if they were honestly earned… through the pitch and toss of hard won experience? I have been… however… preparing my face for the inevitable onslaught… smiling each day into the mirror (no seriously! – grin) and working on my laugh lines! Growing older may not be the desirable outcome… but it’s the inevitable one… so we may as well look happy about it!

I will be78 this month. I feel as well as ever for a
about fifteen minutes a day lol looking forward to May when my son,d-in-law, and my lady friend do a self drive barge trip om the Canal d Garonne
Roger… I am SO going with you all… even if I do have to invite myself! LOL (relax… juuussst kidding!) The barge trip sounds terrific! I hope you get time for lots of sketching along the way and we get to reap the rewards by seeing them on your return. You know… you don’t sound or act like 78… which I guess is my point exactly! Go for it Roger… we’ll be right behind you!
Happy Birthday to you, Roger! And have a wonderful barge trip … I think I’ll stow away with Jean. I agree that you act younger than most do at 78 years … even if you only feel young for 15 minutes a day! Ha! I was 62 in January, and this last year is the first year my body has ever given any hints that it’s aging. My mind? Who knows. Have a great trip!
Jean, I love today’s cartoon, “The University of the Third Earring.” It’s wonderful, and as usual so is your essay.
Were you in the fire area? I hope not.
No… not in the fire area… thank God. I am situated around midway between flood and fire… so many extremes in this wide brown land!
Thanks Vernita
I was glad you picked up on the University of the Third Earring! My daughter gave me a blank puzzled look. I guess you’ve got to be over a certain age! LOL
Man Jean..you are pumping!!! I got quite a giggle out of your latest “observation” and concur that age is a number that we perceive as something to be feared! Is it not what we have done with that number, more than the number itself???? I like to think that at 45 I have packed heaps into my life and can now pass some of that on. I also like to think that within the years to come, my hair may lose colour, muscles may wither..but my hunger for adventure, beauty and joy will never age!! Bring it on!
Happy Birthday Roger!!!!!!
Thanks Jools!
Yes it’s definitely an attitude. Granted… some have a few more obstacles placed before them than others… but if we can stay well (something most of us have some degree of control over) and stay vitally interested in something (anything) we are more than half way toward leading a fulfilling existence as we grow older (younger? – grin) No promises it will be easy though…. but then “easy” is rarely “fulfilling!”
It must be the month for birthdays… with Roger and John both celebrating. Happy Birthday to you both!
First of all, super cartoon, Jean!
Wow, you managed to get my HADS brain spinning, which is a good thing. So many thoughts came to me as I read your sweet, dead-on comments. It’s now 10 in the evening and I’ve just had a drink and some dinner after getting home from my high school lacrosse team’s first game, and first victory this year (a lopsided win, 18-0). I am a month shy of completing my seventh decade, but my gosh, my life is full and active. Coaching, cartooning, painting, writing, performing, playing music, and it sometimes seems to me that people half my age are suffering more aches and pains than I am. I figure I’ll just keep following my head until my body screams at us (my head and me) that it’s time to stop, and until then if the worst age has to throw at me is a few wrinkles, well, okay. It’s a small price to pay for the chance to go on having fun.
And thanks, Jean, for the lovely words.
Happy birthday John! Goodness me…Pisceans everywhere!!
Whoops..you would not be a Piscean John, but Aries is pretty cool too.
You’re very welcome John… thanks for taking the time to read them!
Congratulations btw on your team’s magnificent win! How rewarding it must be to see those boys continue to succeed as they do (on and off the field)… and to know that their success is in no small part due to you! That’s a wonderful achievement in itself. But couple that with your many other accomplishments… and zest for life… and what’s a few wrinkles if only to make the look more distinguished! Go for it John!
Jools… how do you know that? I am flat out knowing my own star sign without knowing when/where the other star signs fall! Why oh why did I have to be the scales? Endlessly weighing up and analysing… evaluating and seeking parity in everything. It’s exhausting! LOL
Have a great day!
Lol Jean…they are the very reasons that I adore Librans and I have quite a few that I can all friend! Most of their time is spent weighing things up to be fair and just, even if it means THEY miss out! Thats when I come in and say to them “Wait a minute…what about you????”
Thanks Jools
You can’t know how much I needed that today! LOL
No worries Jean! Have you decided what you are going to wear for the opening, I’m thinking funky!!
Yep… that could definitely be an option! LOL Gosh it’s next Friday isn’t it? I’d better call up and get some details.
I am quite excited about seeing you again Jean…and it will be good to get out and about and see what everybody else is doing too!
Yoo hoo Jeano????? 3 more sleeps!
