Last night while the rest of the world was sleeping… La Belle Femme [No. 3 in the series] was winging her way stateside for the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe 114th Annual Open Juried Exhibition.

Not the original painting though of course [not yet anyway]… but her digital image… which was to be posted ahead of the pre-selection process. It sure had been a mission getting her away by the deadline [arranging bank drafts in US dollars and paying for international priority post did kind of make me wonder if the whole process might not have been done more expeditiously online]

But… it felt good to be sending her off in the post.

And part of me wished I was going too!

Our girl is no shrinking violet though. She won’t be needing me. And whether or not the pre-selection judges will deem her worthy of a second glance [against a probable field of way more conservative entries] is anyone’s guess… and quite honestly… of not much consequence to her!  She thinks her job is just to lounge around and look beautiful with her nose pressed up to the inside glass and not worry at all about such trivial trifles. And she would be right… [grin]

Either way… at least she will be there… mixing it with the other entries and doing her darnedest to put her best foot forward [okay scratch that - she doesn't actually HAVE a foot - or a nose for that matter - so let's just say - the best of whatever she can manage to put up] for the artist who painted her into this world [which would be me] *wink*

You should know that she hadn’t been my first choice for this Exhibition. But when the painting I had been working on neglected to co-operate with the deadline… there was only one thing left to do. And don’t worry… the prudence of choosing a more conservative subject has not been lost on me either but hey… who knows?

Maybe this was what was meant to be? [insert here musical score from Lost or X files - either will do]

All this too… in the week that Wonder Woman was given a makeover after 69 years in the same skimpy outfit.

Is the world turning toward a more conservative viewpoint?

[If so La Belle Femme might definitely get the cold shoulder *wink*]

Or is it really as WW creators insist… “that no woman wants to wear the same outfit for 69 years” Now there’s something I can relate to [grin]

Either way… what the new costume lacks in pizzaz… it makes up for in bark [if not bite]. The new look speaks more of bikie chick funk than true feminine punch… and probably falls more into line with modern day sensibilities. But somehow I think I shall always miss the unabashed feminine glamour of the earlier version *sigh*

What are your thoughts?

Okay… returning you now to the regular program…

If Belle does succeed in gaining pre-selection… the original framed painting will be shipped to New York for the October event and [if I can manage to package tape myself to the crate] I will go too. But I’m not preempting anything… because anything can happen. Especially when you’re making an entrance more than quite possibly outside of the dress code after flying in on a wing and a prayer from the opposite side of the planet!

Our girl Belle won’t be fazed either way as she already has her future all mapped out for her. She will be helping to find a cure for breast cancer with 20% of the proceeds from the sale of this painting going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation

Breast cancer touches us all.

Finding a cure… and better ways to help the people we love is now more essential than ever.

La Belle Femme series is now dedicated to this cause.

I fell in love with Sweet Addiction the first time I heard it.

It was a couple of days before Christmas… and La Belle Femme was in the early stages of conception. I had received a commission for a large nude painting in landscape format. So not being someone who does things by halves… I decided instead to paint three! [I know... I know]

As I was sketching out ideas… and deciding on how I would approach the series… this piece of music dropped into my email inbox via Facebook. I had it playing in the background on my laptop… and listened to it over and over again. I never tired of it. Before long I was completely beguiled by the sound. It was indeed a “Sweet Addiction” [grin]

The making of the Music…

Sweet Addiction was created by Daniel Marolla… a young man who is definitely going places! He created and recorded this piece of music one afternoon in mid December using [keyboard drums and base guitar] an Mbox and Garageband… then shot his video for You Tube from the built-in camera on his laptop and edited it in Final Cut Studio. If all that sounds like double dutch… well… don’t worry. Just listen to the music… it will speak for itself!

The making of the Art…

The first in this series was initially a commission. The paintings were relatively large for watercolour at 76cm x 38cm – [that's 30" x 15"] with the figures approx. 1/2 life size. It was so much fun working wet into wet in the initial stages… just allowing the paint to flow and directing it where I wanted it to go.

It’s fast… it’s fluid… it’s free and wow… you just gotta love working in watercolour!

Willow charcoal of course… adds another dimension. It’s a style I have been working on for a couple of years now especially in figure and life work.

The pics were taken on my humble little Panasonic Lumix and assembled as a slideshow in iPhoto. I purposely kept the photos edgy and a bit blurred by movement with [perhaps] some “debatable” degree of success!

And of course… iPhoto is no precise science but that’s about the extent of my techie expertise at this time. I am however willing to learn.  Note to self: Get Final Cut Pro… there has GOT to be a better way!  [Grin]

By the time the three paintings were done… the music had weaved it’s incredible magic into them all.

Consequently… what you hear and see here is the end product of an [unintended] creative collaboration between paint and music. It was entirely unintentional of course.

Daniel could not have known that his music would so happily “belong” to these paintings that afternoon in December when he brought this music to life!  He was afterall on his own creative tangent … and the paintings did not [as yet] exist!  But somehow… still… the paintings and the music seemed strangely made for each other!

Enjoy the clip!  Let me know what you think… leave a comment here!

Okay… as promised… here is Reef Girl 2.  This painting swam away a couple of times and for a short while was lost at sea.  But just when I thought I’d have to start over… there it was… washed up in the shallows all along.   There are aspects of this painting that I simply love.  Nuances that I couldn’t have ever hoped or planned for.  Some things didn’t turn out as planned… but that’s okay. She has the breeze in her face and that’s what’s most important.

And besides… that’s the nature of watercolour and why I entirely love it.  It’s kind of predictably unpredictable.  But the unpredictability can be pretty much predicted… and expected even [if not entirely accepted]… and worked with to get a good final result… if you get my drift?  (((chuckles)))

Well… it’s been another busy week.  I am enjoying the Reef House experience.  The best thing about painting in an environment such as this… is that for the most part… people on vacation are generally a pretty happy lot.  I’ve met some fabulous people this week… enjoyed some engaging conversations which ran the gamut of social chat about the weather… to art… to politics… to architecture… to the Outback.. around to Art and back.  You know me.

Early in the week there were the four young Bostonians (hi guys!)… hell bent on enjoying everything they saw and did which included of course… jumping off… into… around and over as many obstacles as they could find around the place. Adventure was their modus operandi and I hope the far north of Australia did not disappoint.  I last saw them heading off to bungy jump in the rainforest.

I had earlier commented about how beautiful the rainforest was up there… how the platform is high up above the rainforest canopy and how glorious the view. [Or so I had been told - grin].  Then  of course… the inevitable question… “but what was it like to actually jump?”  Jump?  Who said anything about jumping!?

Let’s face it… I’m an artist… not a thrill seeker… and happily leaping off a platform high up in the treetops with a rubber band tied loosely to my left ankle is not my particular brand of nirvana!  They of course… remained unconvinced… but let me off the hook anyway to their very great credit. Grin.

Then there was the couple who had journeyed north onboard the MV Trinity Bay [the old port authority sand dredge] up around the tip of Cape York and back.  As fate would have it… I had once upon a time steered the Trinity Bay out through the leeds of Cairns Harbour leaving a rather wobbly wake behind… [but that's another story].  I was interested to hear about the old ship and how it was enjoying a new lease on life as a tourist vessel delivering the mail and supplies up to the Cape.

A bit of later research revealed that this was in fact not the same vessel that I had steered all those years ago.  The current vessel took on the name after the original vessel was scuttled at sea after a long and noble life as a humble sand dredge.  I have to say that part of me was more than a little bit relieved actually… as I was having a hard time reconciling the fact that the hulk of a thing I remembered captaining for just a few minutes all those years ago… could have survived to later become a seaworthy tourist vessel.  I mean… it was old back then!

And then of course… there was the lovely couple from Sydney who I’m sure were sent as messengers of the Universe to remind me that there are good people everywhere who are ready willing and able to take a moment [or even an hour or two] to encourage artistic endeavour whenever and wherever they see it… from the mines of Broken Hill… to the far northern tropical beaches of Queensland.  That’s a rare gift.  And one that will always be appreciated by artists [and humans] everywhere.  I hope we stay in touch.

It may be a man’s world… but it would be nothing without a (pesky & persistent) woman!

another entry in www.NewMatilda.com.au Political Cartooning Competition

(and yes… oops… Barack has one R!)

With a Dad and three brothers in my childhood home… my mother and I were used to the rough and tumble of living in a house full of boys.  Consequently I think boys are great.  Different entirely to girls… who are okay too mind you… but way more complicated (grin). Boys on the other hand are pretty straight forward.  They say what they mean and mean what they say… punch first… ask questions later… that sort of thing.  (Though I hasten to add… being the only girl in a family of boys had it’s strategic advantages too cos no-one was allowed to punch me!  Ha!)

I have always found the notion of being a woman in a man’s world rather intriguing.  The idea of mixing it with the boys who definitely seem to have the numbers in almost every arena (including cartooning) doesn’t really faze me… I grew up with boys remember?  But still sometimes my ignorance of any tangible sort of philosophical difference between the genders still surprises me.

This ignorance has on occasion led me inadvertently into a number of humourous situations.  Like the time I blithely sailed into the Gentlemen’s Room in the Qantas Lounge at LA International Airport… (incredibly jet lagged and in transit)… sending all assembled gents into an intercontinental flat spin and the room into an all-out unholy panic. Pandemonium ensued… as redfaced I realised my error.  [I shall never again underestimate the power of a woman to clear the mens room in under 30 seconds flat!]  I do however  swear on my life to never ever do it again!  Anyway by the by.  I hadn’t intended to tell you that story… but it was funny at the time… and what the hey!

What I had intended to tell you about was the new Life Drawing Session I went to the other night.  No stranger to life drawing… and being used to a “mixed” group… it took a comment fully half way through the three hour session to alert me to the fact that besides the model… I was the only female in the room.

“There’s life drawing on Monday mornings too you know” came the wake up call that enlightened me.

“Oh thanks” I responded appreciatively to the kind gentleman beside me… still not entirely getting it.

“but Monday doesn’t suit… and Wednesday night is just fine by me…”  I trailed off

As the last word spilled confidently from my lips the realisation hit me.  I looked around at the bunch of friendly and (don’t get me wrong) more than perfectly well behaved guys in the group and realised for the first time that I was definitely the odd man out.

I chatted with the model out in the kitchen over a cup of tea on our break… and learned that she too had no nonsense boys in her life and was unfazed (despite her lack of apparel) by the prospect of being in a room full of blokes. Though I’ve got to say… I reckon her courage exceeded mine by a very large measure! LOL

Undeterred I pushed on into the second half and left with a reasonable assortment of 2, 5, and 10 minute sketches.  Whilst they are not serious art… I find quick sketches great for figure referencing in subsequent paintings.  And life sketches do have a spontaneous freshness that is sometimes hard to beat.

I think I shall go back again next week… what do you reckon?

If only to stir things up a bit?   Heavens knows I need the practice!
